Rich in History, Rich in Flavor

The Diedrich Story is as rich as the flavor of our coffee. It all started in 1916, when Charlotte Diedrich inherited a coffee plantation in Costa Rica.

Charlotte Diedrich

1916

Charlotte’s hard work and dedication to the coffee business quickly resulted in orders for her fine beans from around the world. Admiring his mother’s love for the plantation and her unyielding desire to produce the best possible coffee beans, Charlotte’s son Carl decided that he wanted to be a part of the family business.

Carl began a worldwide odyssey to find his place in the coffee industry. His travels took him to Naples, Italy, where he studied the art and craft of roasting. He discovered the ancient and thriving local tradition of the coffeehouse in the Middle East, and decided to follow coffee back to its very source: Yemen. Upon his return to Germany, he met and married Inga, whose own family had a background as coffee, tea and cocoa merchants dating back to the mid-1800s.

Early 1960s

Carl began to pass along his wealth of knowledge to his sons, Stephan and Martin, who have each embraced the art of coffee-making in their own way.

1966

Carl and Inga purchased a 45-acre coffee plantation in Antigua, Guatemala, where they harvested 400 sacks of quality Arabica beans each year.

1972

Carl and Inga filled up their VW microbus with beans from their plantation and headed north from Guatemala, migrating to Orange County, California, where the company’s headquarters are currently located.

Diedrich Coffee, a neighborhood coffeehouse, was founded by Martin Diedrich in 1983. He took over the retail, roasting and importing facets of the family business from retiring Carl.
