So you have a craving for Wingstop Ranch, but you don’t want to leave your house or pay ridiculous food delivery fees? This copycat Wingstop Ranch Dressing recipe can be whipped up in minutes with just a few simple ingredients!
What makes Wingstop Ranch so Good?
The secret is in the powder. Wingstop uses…wait for it…Hidden Valley Ranch dry seasoning packets. And, believe it or not, most restaurants in the United States make their ranch dressing using Hidden Valley Ranch packets.
The exact recipe Wingstop uses is pretty straightforward. They use cultured heavy creme (creme fraiche), mayonnaise, and Hidden Valley Ranch powder. And that’s why it’s so good!
Not All Ranch is the Same
One of these things is not like the other! The ranch dressing you get at the restaurant vs. the drive-through vs. the grocery store is quite different.
Bottled ranch dressing (the kind you buy at the grocery store) is made using vegetable oil instead of mayonnaise since vegetable oil is more shelf-stable.
In-house restaurant ranch is either made from scratch or with packets of Hidden Valley Ranch, mayo, and cultured cream (sour cream, creme fraiche).
Fast food restaurants will typically hand out shelf-stable ranch packets, which don’t need to be refrigerated since they’re packed with preservatives.
Main Ingredients in Wingstop Ranch:
This section of the recipe will detail the key ingredients needed to make that unique Wingstop taste.
For the best ranch, use the best mayonnaise you can find. I don’t have a favorite, per se, but I tend to use Hellman’s. I’m sure an organic mayo will have an even better overall taste. Of course, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can make your own mayo!
What is Mayonnaise, Exactly?
Mayonnaise is a creamy dressing made with oil, lemon juice or vinegar, egg yolks, and seasonings. It’s often used as a condiment for sandwiches and other cold foods. It can be found in the grocery store’s refrigerated section near jams, jellies, and salad dressings.
2. Cultured Heavy Creme (Crème Fraîche)
Crème fraîche is important in this recipe because it’s got the tanginess of sour cream with the added benefit of not being as thick. This results in a creamier ranch dressing.
If you don’t have creme fraiche handy, feel free to use sour cream as a substitute.
What isCrème Fraîche?
Crème fraîche is a rich dairy product with a tart and tangy taste that originates from France. It can be used as a substitute for sour cream, and the recipe includes adding cultured buttermilk to fresh cream and letting it stand at room temperature until thickened.
3. Hidden Valley Ranch Packet
This is the secret ingredient! Each packet of Hidden Valley Ranch includes buttermilk powder, garlic powder, onion powder, MSG, and other spices.
How To Make Wingstop Ranch Dip:

How Do I Make Homemade Ranch Dressing?
If you want to go a more homemade ranch dressing route, use the following recipe:
- 1 cup Mayonnaise
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/3 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 tsp finely chopped parsley
- 1/2 tsp finely chopped dill
- 1-1/4 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
Step 1: Combine Wet Ingredients
Mix the mayonnaise, sour cream, and buttermilk in a medium bowl. You can use a stand mixer if you want, but a little elbow grease and a whisk will do the job.
What if you don’t have buttermilk? Buttermilk is easy to make. Scroll down slightly to find my simple buttermilk recipe.
Step 2: Add Seasonings
Add the finely chopped fresh parsley, finely chopped dill, garlic powder, and onion powder to the ranch base. This is your own homemade ranch seasoning. Your taste buds will thank me.
Mix until all ingredients are fully incorporated. Taste-test at this point and add a sprinkle of kosher salt or freshly ground black pepper.
How to Make Homemade Buttermilk
Buttermilk can be hard to find sometimes. And it’s not an ingredient I keep in my fridge at all times. But, it turns out, buttermilk is incredibly simple to make. All you need is whole milk and lemon juice or vinegar.
Step 1: Add one cup of whole milk to a small mixing bowl.
Step 2: Next, stir in 1 tablespoon of either white distilled vinegar or fresh lemon juice. The acid in the vinegar or lemon juice will thicken and curdle the milk, resulting in buttermilk!
This process takes about 10 minutes.
Frequently Asked Questions
In this section, I’ll answer some frequently asked ranch-related questions.
How Do I Thicken My Ranch Dressing?
So your ranch dressing is too runny for your taste. We’ve all been there. Here is a simple remedy to help thicken your ranch dressing.
Add a tablespoon of mayonnaise or sour cream, one at a time, and stir into your ranch until you get the desired consistency. Some folks swear by using xanthan gum as a thickening agent, but I’ve never tried this, so I can’t vouch for it.
How Do I Thin Out My Ranch Dressing?
If your ranch is too thick, add fresh buttermilk or heavy cream, a little bit at a time, to help thin it out.
What Goes Well With Wingstop Ranch?
This copycat Wingstop Ranch Dressing recipe can be served any way you want! I use ranch dressing most often as a pizza dipping sauce. Here’s a list of ideas for using your homemade ranch dressing:
- Dipping sauce for pizza
- Game day dipping sauce for buffalo wings or hot wings
- Salad dressing (duh)
- Vegetable tray dip
- Dipping sauce for french fries
How Long Will My Ranch Stay Fresh?
This ranch dressing will last about a week in the refrigerator. However, since it’s made out of dairy products, it’s not shelf-stable.
Tip: Make sure you’re using the freshest mayonnaise and cultured heavy creme to get the longest life out of your ranch.
How Do I Store My Ranch?
Since this ranch dressing recipe is made from dairy, you’ll need to store it in an airtight container and refrigerate it until it’s ready to be used.
Feel free to make it ahead of time and refrigerate until it’s ready to serve. I’d refrigerate the ranch for at least 4 hours. This’ll help all the flavors come together.
Can I Freeze Ranch Dressing?
Freezing your ranch dressing isn’t recommended. It’s almost impossible to thaw properly. The texture will become awful. So, I don’t recommend this.
Yes. One of the key ingredients in this recipe is mayonnaise. And one of the key ingredients in mayonnaise is eggs. So if you want an egg-free ranch dressing, substitute regular mayonnaise for vegan mayonnaise.
You’ll have to make other substitutions to consider this one of the vegan versions of ranch dressing.
