What is Strawberry Compote?

Strawberry compote is a mix of whole or sliced strawberries, granulated sugar, lemon or lime juice, and liquor. This mixture is reduced for about 10 minutes over low heat on the stove until the sugar is fully dissolved.

The result will be a sugar syrup fruit sauce with chunks of strawberries.

What’s the Difference Between Jelly and Fruit Compote?

Compotes differ from jellies and jams in that compotes usually are served immediately, while jelly and jams are preserved for later use. Strawberry jam and jelly also tend to be a bit thicker, with fewer large chunks of fruit than a compote.

Here’s a breakdown of the difference between jams, jellies, and fruit compotes:

  • Fruit Preserves: Sugar sprinkled over whole or sliced fruit
  • Fruit Compote: Sugar, whole or sliced fruit, reduced over heat (eaten immediately)
  • Jelly: Sugar, fruit juice, and gelatin
  • Jam: Sugar, chopped fresh fruit, and gelatin
  • Marmalade: Sugar and whole or chopped citrus (oranges, lemons)
  • Chutney: Sugar, vinegar, pureed fruit, and spices

3 Reasons Why I Love This Recipe

There are many reasons to love this easy strawberry compote recipe. Here are just a few:

1. All-Natural Ingredients:

I know where all my ingredients are coming from! I get my strawberries from my garden during strawberry season, my lemons from the farmer’s market, and my sugar from the grocery store.

2. Easy To Make

With only 3 ingredients, it’s honestly the easiest recipe on my website. All you need are strawberries, a lemon, and half a cup of sugar.

3. Fool-Proof Recipe

You can “eyeball” most of the measurements in this recipe. Want a sweeter compote? Add a 1/4 cup more sugar. Want a boozier compote? Add a splash of lavender rum.

No matter what, you really can’t mess up this recipe.

Can I Add My Own Ingredients or Make Substitutions?

Yes! For instance, if you want a tangier recipe, feel free to add some lemon zest in addition to your lemon juice.

Some people add orange juice, orange zest, maple syrup, or simple syrup. Some also add a pinch of salt. However, I find that my recipe is the easiest route to take.

What Should I Serve My Strawberry Compote With?

For this recipe, I made my compote as a topping on my store-bought cheesecake. Here is my very own cheesecake recipe if you’re feeling up to the task.

Strawberry compote as a cheesecake topping is heaven-sent. Here are some other ideas of how to use your compote as a perfect topping:

  • Eat it by itself! (no judgement here)
  • Pound cake topping
  • As a cheesecake topping
  • Pour over top of icecream
  • As a cake topping
  • Dipping sauce
  • Alternative to cranberry sauce for Thanksgiving
  • Add to greek yogurt
  • As cake topping with whipped cream on top!

Can I Add Liquor To My Compote?

Oh, most definitely. If you’re going to add liquor, I would only use 1/2 of a lemon. Then, add 1 to 2 tablespoons of your chosen liquor at the same stage as you add the lemon juice.

You can also add liquor at the end if you don’t want any alcohol to cook off. If you add liquor at the end, make sure you have a thicker compote, so the booze doesn’t thin it out too much.

What Other Kinds of Fruit Compote Can I Make?

The sky is the limit with compotes since they’re just fruit + sugar + lemon juice + heat.

Other fruit compote ideas include:

  • Blueberry
  • Pomegranite
  • Mango
  • Grape
  • Pineapple
  • Orange

How Do I Store my Compote?

You can store compote in an air-tight glass jar in the refrigerator for a week or two. If you’re going to store it in the freezer, make sure to use an airtight container or freezer-safe bag. Frozen compote will last 3-6 months.

In our house, we use the FoodSaver for EVERYTHING. It keeps things fresher so much longer.

The amount of food we were wasting and the money we were losing before using a FoodSaver is insane. So my wife and I look at our marriage as “Before FoodSaver (BFS)” vs. “After FoodSaver (AFS).”

How to Make Strawberry Compote:

Here is how to make a DIY compote at home:

Gather Ingredients:

  • 1/2 pound of strawberries
  • 1/2 cup of sugar (8 tablespoons of sugar)
  • 1 lemon
  • Mint (optional, doesn’t impart much flavor)

The mint is just for show 🙂

Step 1: Prepare Your Fruit

Remove the green part, and then cut your strawberries in 1/2 or 1/4’s. I leave mine in half because I like larger chunks of fruit.

Cut 1 whole lemon in half and set aside.

Step 2: Add Sugar & Lemon Juice

Place the sliced strawberries in a medium saucepan. Add 1/2 cup of granulated sugar. Next, grab your lemon halves and squeeze the juice out of both over your sugar and strawberries.

Make sure not to let any lemon seeds fall in.

Note: Use a medium saucepan because it helps excess liquid dissolve quicker. If you use a small saucepan, you’re essentially boiling your fruit rather than evaporating excess liquids.

Step 3: Cook for 10 Minutes

Turn the heat on to medium heat or medium-high heat. Depending on your stove, you’ll want to adjust if things seem too intense.

Stir now and then, keeping an eye on things.

Do this for 5-10 minutes until the sugar is completely dissolved and the strawberries are at your desired consistency.

Note: If you want firmer fruit in your compote, only cook for 5 minutes.

That’s it! Recipe done! Serve once it’s reached room temperature or store in a clean jar for a week in your fridge.
