If you’re looking for the cheesy goodness snack, look no further. This Air Fryer frozen Mozzarella Sticks Recipe is incredibly easy and only takes 6 minutes!
Why Use an Air Fryer?
I recommend using an air fryer for cooking your mozzarella sticks because they don’t use oil to fry your food. Instead, they use circulated hot air to cook, which results in healthier mozzarella cheese sticks.
Air frying also saves you time since they cook food in a fraction of the time of a standard oven. An air fryer will cook perfect mozzarella sticks in 6 minutes, versus a traditional oven which takes at least 20-30 minutes.
What’s the Best Air Fryer Brand?
The best air fryer brand, in my opinion, is Philips. I’ve had my Philips Air Fryer for three years, and it’s never done me dirty. I use the more affordable analog air fryer.
There are zero frills. All I do is set the temp, turn my dial, and wait a few minutes.
Why This is the Best Recipe
Here’s why this is the best recipe for air frying frozen mozzarella sticks:
- Fastest way to get crispy-on-the-outside and gooey-on-the-inside mozzarella sticks
- Mimics the restaurant-quality flavor you’re used to
- No cheese leakage
- Great way to start learning about Air Fryers
- Saves you time and money
- Perfect appetizer to serve for game day or after-school cheesy snack
- No egg mixture or breading to worry about
Are Mozzarella Sticks Healthy?
As with anything, it all comes down to balance. A few mozz sticks as a snack is totally okay. In fact, mozzarella sticks have a good amount of protein and calcium.
But “healthy” doesn’t always come down to calorie content. For example, some major brands of mozzarella sticks are loaded with preservatives.
Avoid the preservative-laden brands by choosing Trader Joe’s brand or a different, organic brand, which will have fewer preservatives than the major brands.
Which Is the Healthiest Brand of Mozzarella Sticks?
Not gonna lie; I was surprised by the outcome of this question after doing thorough research. It turns out that Walmart has the healthiest option!
Here’s a list of the top 5 mozzarella stick brands and their calorie content (per stick), in order of highest to lowest:
- 365 (Whole Foods) Mozzarella Sticks – 110 calories
- TGI Fridays Mozzarella Sticks – 100 calories
- Trader Joe’s Mozzarella Sticks – 95 calories
- Farm Rich Mozarella Sticks – 90 calories
- Walmart (Great Value) Mozzarella Sticks – 70 calories
Surprising Result: Walmart-brand mozzarella sticks (Great Value) have the fewest calories per serving!
How Many Calories Do Air Fryer Mozzarella Sticks Have?
Calories vary depending on the brand. For example, Whole Foods 365 has the most calories per serving, whereas Great Value has the least calories per mozzarella stick, with only 70 calories and 8g of carbohydrates each.
Can I Cook Mozzarella Sticks and French Fries in My Air Fryer at the Same Time?
Yes, you can cook mozzarella sticks and french fries in your air fryer simultaneously. But since they have different cook times, you’ll need to cook in steps, for the best results.
First, place frozen french fries on one side of your basket. Cook these fries for 6 minutes at 400 degrees.
Next, add your frozen mozzarella sticks to the other side of the basket, next to the fries. Cook these both for an additional 6 minutes.
Tips for the Best Mozzarella Sticks
Next time you’re making air fryer frozen mozzarella sticks, be sure to remember these tips:
- Only air fry frozen mozzarella sticks.
- Don’t overcook these or the cheese will seep out of the breading.
- Don’t crowd the air fryer basket. Use the rack insert that came with your air fryer if you’re cooking a double batch. Air fryers use circulated hot air to cook, so you need plenty of room around each mozzarella stick.
- Don’t spray your basket with cooking spray
Key Ingredients & Equipment:
Here are the key ingredients and equipment needed to pull off this recipe:
1. Frozen & Breaded Mozzarella Sticks
Any brand will do, as long as they’re frozen. I’m using Great Value brand for this recipe, and I’m placing 8 cheese sticks total in my basket.
2. Air Fryer
Since this is an air fryer recipe, you’ll need….wait for it…an Air Fryer. I find Philips to be a solid brand. I’ve used my Philips air fryer for the past 3 years, and it’s worked like a charm.
I own the basic model found here on Amazon. If you use a smaller air fryer, remember that total cooking time will vary slightly depending on the brand.
How To Air Fry Frozen Mozzarella Sticks
This recipe couldn’t be any easier since it’s literally a “set it and forget it” recipe.
Step 1: Add Mozzarella Sticks to Air Fryer Basket
Place 6 – 8 frozen mozzarella sticks in your air fryer basket. Spread them out a little bit, so there’s room between each stick. If you want to cook a double batch, use the tray insert for your basket. Put 8 on top and 8 on the bottom.
Step 2: Cook The Mozzarella Sticks
Set the temperature to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and cook for 6 minutes. 6 minutes is the perfect amount of time to ensure the cheese melts and the crust gets crispy.
Note: You’ll want to pay close attention to the timer on these. The minute your cheese sticks are done, pull them out of the air fryer. This way, you avoid any cheese leakage by removing them from the heat.
Note 2: Most frozen mozzarella stick brands don’t have air fryer timings in the instructions. 6 minutes at 400 degrees is a good universal cook temp and time.
That’s it! These are ready to be plunged into your favorite dipping sauce. My go-to sauce is heated marinara sauce. Many frozen mozzarella stick brands come with a marinara sauce packet in the box.
How Long To Cook Mozzarella Sticks in Air Fryer?
Air fry your frozen mozzarella sticks for 6 minutes total cook time at 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Don’t cook longer than 6 minutes to avoid the cheese melting out of the breading.
Cook them in a single layer with space between each mozzarella stick to allow even cooking and plenty of airflow.
Can Mozzarella Sticks Be Reheated?
Yes, mozzarella sticks can be reheated once they’ve been cooked from their frozen state. The best way to reheat your mozzarella sticks is to put them right back in the air fryer. Reheat them for 1 minute at 400 degrees.
If you’re wondering if mozzarella sticks can be microwaved, the answer is yes, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Reheating using a microwave will result in soggy, wet mozzarella sticks.
You can also reheat them in your oven. Place them on a parchment paper lined baking sheet and cook for 10 minutes at 400 degrees.
What Are Mozzarella Sticks Good With?
The best dipping sauce for mozzarella sticks, in my opinion, is my favorite marinara sauce. Here are some additional sauces I recommend dipping your rich mozzarella sticks into:
- Ranch dressing
- Blue cheese
- Sour cream
- Honey Mustard
- BBQ Sauce
- Spicy mustard
- French onion dip
You can also sprinkle seasonings on your mozzarella sticks once they’re done cooking. My favorites are garlic powder, cayenne pepper, and italian seasoning.
They’re also great served with Air Fried Chicken Nuggets, or air fryer pizza rolls.

How Do You Stop Cheese From Melting Out When You Cook Mozarella Sticks?
Only cook your mozzarella sticks for the recommended time. Any longer and the melted cheese will burst through the breaded crust. Also, the cheese will leak into the bottom of your air fryer basket, which is a pain to clean up.
Simply cook them for 6 minutes and then in an additional 30 second to 1-minute increments if you want a really crispy crust.
Can You Deep Fry Mozzarella Sticks?
Yes. Deep fry mozzarella sticks by heating vegetable oil to 375 degrees in a deep saucepan, a Le Creuset dutch oven, or an Elite Gourmet deep fryer. Cook them until the outside crust is golden brown. Set them on a paper towel to cool for a few minutes before serving.
Can I Freeze Mozzarella Sticks After I Make Them?
You can freeze mozzarella sticks after you’ve cooked them. Place them in a freezer-safe Ziploc bag. Better yet, use a FoodSaver to create an airtight bag. FoodSavers remove all excess air from the plastic bag and heat seal the bag for long-lasting freshness.
If sealed and stored correctly, frozen mozzarella sticks will last 3-4 months in the freezer.
Are Mozzarella Sticks Halal?
Yes, Mozzarella sticks are halal. They’re made from cheese, which is made from milk, and milk is halal. Rennet, which is found in the stomachs of ruminant animals, plays a crucial role in cheesemaking, and it too is halal.
Are Mozzarella Sticks Vegetarian?
Since mozzarella sticks don’t contain animal meat, they’re technically safe for vegetarians to eat. However, vegans will avoid eating mozzarella sticks since they contain dairy and breading made with eggs.
Are Mozzarella Sticks Gluten-Free?
Most frozen mozzarella sticks are not gluten-free because they have a breaded crust. However, TGI Friday’s sells gluten-free mozzarella sticks that you can find at your local grocery store.
You can also make homemade gluten-free mozzarella sticks using almond flour as your crust instead of all-purpose flour or panko breadcrumbs.
Are Mozzarella Sticks Keto?
Mozzarella cheese, on its own, is an excellent keto snack. But, once you add the breading, the net grams of carbs skyrocket. You can make homemade mozzarella sticks that are keto-diet-friendly using keto bread crumbs (ground-up pork rinds). Here is one of my favorites.
When Were Mozzarella Sticks Invented and How Are They Made?
Mozzarella sticks started popping up in Pizza joints in the U.S. in the 1970s, though their origin can be traced back to 14th century Paris, France. These old-timey mozzarella sticks were known as “pipefarce” and were made with muenster cheese instead of mozzarella.
You can read more about the origins of mozzarella cheese sticks here.
Modern mozzarella sticks are made by dipping string cheese into an egg wash made out of large eggs, followed by a coating of bread crumbs and seasonings. Then, they’re frozen before cooking in an air fryer, hot oil, or oven.
